Bollywood Comes To Birmingham!

"The Bollywood Experience" is coming to the Alys Stephens Center on Saturday, November 13 for 2 shows at 10 am and 11:30 am. The show is a family oriented perfomance and is part of the ASC Kid's Club, but interested people of all ages are encouraged to come and be a part of this fascinating presentation.

I had a chance to interview the star of this show, Parul Kapoor, who shared with me some interesting things about herself and "The Bollywood Experience".

ASC: Parul can you tell us a little about yourself!

Parul: I am 21 years old, I am a senior at UAB, studying Marketing and Psychology. I am from India, I moved to Buffalo, NY when I was about 10 years old. I have been dancing since the age of 3, and since then have performed in various shows.

ASC: What inspired you to pursue dance?

Parul: My parents registered me for classical Indian dance classes when I was very young, and ever since I just fell in love with dancing and decided to continue. I completed four years of Kathak (One of the classical Indian dance form) training before moving to the United States. Here in United states I continued to perform in various shows and further enhanced my dancing skills through Bollywood movies.

ASC: What led you to pursue Indian dance and did you study formally?

Parul: I have my parents to thank for this, as they are the ones who recognized my interest and talent in dance and encouraged me to pursuit it at an early age. Yes, I have formal training in an Indian dance form called Kathak, I compeleted a four years course in Kathak.

ASC: What can people who come to your performance expect to see/hear?

Parul: People coming to the Bollywood Experience show can expect to see very graceful and traditional performances from 8 different dancers, see extravagant and glamorous costumes and jewelry Inspired by Bollywood movies, and get a taste of different styles of dance music from India.

ASC: How would you define what "Bollywood" is to someone who is not familiar with the term?

Parul: Bollywood is the name of the Indian movie industry at Bombay, that makes almost 500 movies per year. Dances and music is an important and esential part of Bollywood movies. I plan to give the audience a taste of music and dances of Bollywood. All the performances in the show are inspired by Bollywood movies.

ASC: What do you want the audience to leave with after your performance?

Parul: The audience will experience a variety of performances ranging from epic tales to friendship, family and love and tradition, the show will certainly be an enjoyable new experience for the audience, and it will leave them wanting to see more in the future!

Growing a Love of the Arts
Thanks to Jane Stephens Comer's generous donation to UAB's Alys Stephens Center, a brand new arts education initiative called ArtPlay will open its doors to the public in early 2011. This beautiful Victorian house, located in the heart of Southside only blocks away from the Alys Stephens Center, will be home to ASC's expanded education and outreach program. The house is being renovated to provide quality art programming for every generation of aspiring artist, a community venue with an array of programming for creative learning, and a beautiful setting for special events. Arts classes will be available for all ages in dance, music, visual arts, film, and theatre from local arts organizations and individual teachers. Classes will be announced and registration will begin this November.

Seth Meyers Trivia

Seth Meyers, a longtime member of the cast of "Saturday Night Live" who delivers the "Weekend Update" each week, will perform at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on November 2. Meyers will perform at 7 p.m. at UAB's Alys Stephens Center. It will be UAB's first-ever Homecoming Comedy show.

Here are a few things you may not know about Seth:

After graduating from Manchester West High School in Manchester, New Hampshire, he earned a degree from Northwestern University, then he took his act on the road. He worked with the traveling troupe of a group called Boom Chicago.
While his dad, Larry Meyers, works with GE Trade Finance, his mom, Hilary Meyers, is a legendary French teacher at McKelvie Middle School in Bedford, New Hampshire, who is known almost universally throughout the town as Madame Meyers.
He sees three distinct Windows of Rejection, which refers to the fact that ideas on SNL have three different opportunities to get rejected before being aired.
He commutes to "Saturday Night Live" (1975) by subway from his apartment in the West Village. Once he gets there, it's hard to leave. There is a constant, break-neck pace to producing a live, weekly television show. Seth has already found that necks are not the only thing that can be broken--your spirit is also on the line every day.
Eventually, the road took him to Amsterdam, where he was the writer and co-star of a two-person comedy show called "Pick-ups and Hiccups" that he and Jill Benjamin staged five nights a week in a 200-seat theater. With Amsterdam as his home base, he did versions of the show in London and Edinburgh--even Singapore--but it was during a brief run at the Chicago Improv Festival that he caught the eye of a "Saturday Night Live" (1975) casting director. He was invited to New York for a try-out, then a follow-up, and then he was hired.

Seth did the introduction for WMUR's Friday Night Football broadcast on September 24, 2004.
In 2006, he was promoted to Weekend Update co-anchor on "Saturday Night Live" (1975) with Amy Poehler.

Birmingham's funniest comes home!

Rickey Smiley, the former host of BET'S Comic View was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He has taken his humorous gags to some of the most popular comedy clubs in the country. Rickey was the host of BET'S Comic View for the 2000-2001 seasons and led the show to its highest jump in ratings in the show's ten-year history. BET then quickly signed Rickey to host "The Way We Do It" during the 2001-2002 season, and that show went on to become one of the top five shows on the network.

Rickey studied at Tuskegee University and is a 1992 graduate of Alabama State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in English. He began his career at small, amateur comedy clubs in Birmingham and is known for his characters, impressions and “Southern” sense of humor. Rickey takes everyday situations and turns them into everyday humor with the help of a few imaginary friends like 90-year-old church lady, Ms. Bernice Jenkins, along with Lil Daryl, a character that gained much notoriety on BET's "Live from L.A." He is a seasoned veteran who established himself as a “clean” comic, in that his material is appropriate for all ages.

From his daily syndicated radio show and intimate comedy club performances, to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden, the Universal Amphitheater and the Lincoln Center, Rickey's unique style of humor resonates with his audiences unlike any other comic on the road today.

"Bollywood" in Birmingham!

Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the total Indian film industry, which includes several regional film industries sorted by language. Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest centers of film production in the world.

Bollywood is formally referred to as Hindi cinema, but there has been a growing presence of Indian English in dialogue and songs as well. It is common to see films that feature dialogue with English words phrases, or even whole sentences.

Drepung Loseling is dedicated to the study and preservation of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of wisdom and compassion. A center for the cultivation of both heart and intellect, it provides a sanctuary for the nurturance of inner peace and kindness, community understanding, and global healing.

To contribute to North American culture by providing theoretical knowledge and practical training in Tibetan Buddhist scholarly traditions for Western students, scholars and the general public; and

Come to a Poncho Sanchez show and you'll hear fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa, and other infectious grooves colliding and churning. His over 20-year relationship with Concord Records has yielded more than two dozen recordings, a Grammy Award and several Grammy nominations. This promises to be a show you don't want to miss! Bill Frisell's Beautiful Dreamers

in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell. Mixing rock and
country with jazz and blues, he's found what connects them:
improvisation and a sense of play. Unlike other pastichists, who
tend to duck passion, Mr. Frisell plays up the pleasure in the music
and also takes on another often-avoided subject, tenderness." - The

Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in
Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop
music on the radio. Soon, the Chicago Blues became a passion through the
work of Otis Rush, B.B. King, Paul Butterfield and Buddy Guy. In high
school, he played in bands covering pop and soul classics, James Brown
and other dance material. Later, Bill studied music at the University of
Northern Colorado before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Over the years, Frisell has contributed to the work of such collaborators as Paul Motian, John Zorn, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Suzanne Vega, Loudon Wainwright III, Van Dyke
Parks, Vic Chesnutt, Rickie, Lee Jones, Ron Sexsmith, Vinicius Cantuaria, Marc Johnson (in "Bass Desires"),
Ronald Shannon Jackson and Melvin Gibbs (in "Power Tools"), Marianne Faithful, John Scofield, Jan
Garbarek, Lyle Mays, Vernon Reid, Julius Hemphill, Paul Bley, Wayne Horvitz, Hal Willner, Robin Holcomb,
Rinde Eckert, The Frankfurt Ballet, film director Gus Van Sant, David Sanborn, David Sylvian, Petra Haden
and numerous others, including Bono, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell and Daniel Lanois on the soundtrack for Wim

This work has established Frisell as one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. The
breadth of such performing and recording situations is a testament not only to his singular guitar conception, but
his musical versatility as well. This, however, is old news by now. In recent years, it is Frisell's role as
composer and band leader which has garnered him increasing notoriety.

ASC screens documentary, Burning In The Sun!

African Children's Choir's Journey Of Hope

In 1984, in the midst of Uganda’s bloody civil war, human rights activist Ray Barnett was called on to help the many thousands of orphaned and starving children, abandoned and helpless to feed and protect themselves.
Realizing the enormity of the task Ray and his team came up with a unique approach. The only way to make a meaningful difference was to impact the lives of these children, one child at a time.
Inspired by the singing of one small boy, he formed the first African Children’s Choir to show the world that Africa’s most vulnerable children have beauty, dignity and unlimited ability.

They immediately impressed audiences with their vibrancy and outstanding musical talent and quickly became a mouthpiece for the plight of the many thousands of vulnerable children like them in Uganda. The funds they earned through donations provided for their own support and education and more!
The proceeds of the first African Children’s Choir tour also funded the building of an orphanage back in Kampala from which a second African Children’s Choir was selected.

In the early years they would tour principally in United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The proceeds of their tours and the sponsorship support they would attract funded a growing program of establishing literacy schools to enable the very neediest children to get a foot up into proper education.
Meanwhile, the continuing care, education and development of returning Choir children was assured through the proceeds of Choir tours and the generosity of sponsors and donors.

Poncho Sanchez and HIS LATIN ORCHESTRA come to the ASC!

If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling.

Although born in Laredo, Texas, in 1951 to a large Mexican-American family, Sanchez grew up in a suburb of L.A., where he was raised on an unusual cross section of sounds that included straightahead jazz, Latin jazz and American soul. By his teen years, his musical consciousness had been solidified by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Wilson Pickett and James Brown. Along the way, he taught himself to play guitar, flute, drums and timbales, but eventually settled on the congas.

Whether it's salsa, straightahead jazz, Latin jazz, or even elements of soul and blues, the mesmerizing array of sounds and colors from Poncho Sanchez's youth have telegraphed across the decades and continue to inform his creative sensibilities to this day. "There's room for a lot of different sounds in our music," he says. "I think people have come to know that that's what Poncho Sanchez is all about. We put it all together in a pot, boil it together and come out with a big stew. This isn't some marketing strategy to sell records. These are the sounds I grew up with. So when I play this music, I'm not telling a lie. I'm telling my story. This is the real thing."

Rosanne Cash sings from "The List"!

Her last name recalls a towering American cultural icon, but Rosanne Cash has carved out a distinctive career on her own as an innovative and idiosyncratic songwriter.
From the three years she spent after high school graduation on tour with her father -- from handling the tour‟s laundry duties to her promotion as a backup singer -- the daughter of Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto, has forged her own place in American music.
She was nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" for "Sea of Heartbreak," a duet with Bruce Springsteen that appears on her critically acclaimed album The List - her ninth career nomination.

And this in a career that spans 12 albums, two of which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Her records spawned 10 No. 1 Billboard singles and 21 Top 40 singles-- and earned her a Grammy in 1985.
But it wasn‟t until now that she was able to record "The List," a deeply personal album that Rolling Stone has awarded 3½ stars--a paean to her father.

Produced with her Grammy-nominated husband John Leventhal, "The List" includes tunes by Bob Dylan ("Girl From the North Country"); Jimmie Rodgers ("Miss the Mississippi"); Patsy Cline ("She‟s Got You"); Merle Haggard ("Silver Wings); and, of course, the Carter Family‟s "Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow." The last was her most personal; June was her stepmother, and Maybelle and Helen taught her to play guitar and proved heavy influences on her as a songwriter.

The new CD is garnering critical raves: American Songwriter says the album is "imbued with tremendous life force." Rolling Stone says, "These imaginative interpretations would make Papa proud."

What is Pat Metheny's Orchestrion?

Pat Metheny has already worked with most of the world’s most talented musicians, so his newest collaboration project had to branch out a little – he’s making sweet music with robots. The famous jazz guitarist has assembled a remarkable robotic orchestra composed of a room full of solenoid and pneumatically driven instruments. Dubbed The Orchestrion Project, the robot ensemble represents a unique attempt to expand musicality into both automated and directed machines. Each instrument follows input from Metheny, allowing him to improvise with his own unique musical style. Metheny has already produced a record using his robot orchestra and is launching a world tour this month. The Orchestrion Project gets its name, and its creative origins, from the mechanically automated orchestras created since the late 1700s. Those early orchestrions expanded on the concept of a player piano allowing for the automated playing of music across multiple instruments. Metheny was inspired by these mechanical ensembles and by the advancing promise of technology. This is a musician who regularly refers to the concepts of Ray Kurzweil to help explain his own work. The creation of mechanical acoustic devices has continued right into the present, but Metheny has taken the idea into a different direction. Rather than simply arrange a musical composition to be played across multiple instruments, he organically builds the voice of each instrument using his improvisational riffs on the guitar. In a sense he’s created a live version of an elaborate over-dubbing studio session wherein he is playing and responding to his improvisation as it is expressed in other instruments. As Metheny describes in related videos on his website, it took a large team of inventors to provide all of the automated instruments in his Orchestrion Project. There’s a Yamaha Disklavier, a bottle ensemble created by the Peterson Company, an electric bass by Ken Caulkins, and many more. Each instrument is acoustic or acoustic-electric, providing for a rich and full sound that synthesizers would be unable to fully mimic in a concert environment.

World renowned guitarist/composer Pat Metheny has won an extraordinary 17 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 33 times in 12 different categories, more than any other performer in Grammy history. On his new tour, which begins in Birmingham, Pat moves from brilliant solo guitar improvisations to the introduction of a totally new technology for the presentation of an acoustically driven "solo ensemble" music he is dubbing Orchestrionics.

Pat's crew has been here at the ASC since the early morning hours today putting this monstrous instrument together and the finished product is indeed impressive. This is truly a show you don't want to miss as Pat singlehandedly controls the Orchestrion without a band. It is a project that is far and away more innovative than anything he has tackled onstage in previous tours, but the results are awe inspiring!

Are you familiar with dumpster diving? You hear about people sifting through dumpsters for valuables and unfound treasures, but what about dumpster diving for your next meal?

The award-winning film DIVE! looks further into this rising trend. This movie, part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, seeks to explain the phenomenon of grocery stores throwing away perfectly edible food. The apparent contradiction asks the question of why good food is being thrown away when countless people are hungry.

Filmmaker Jeremy Seifert goes on a dumpster diving adventure to discover why food is being trashed versus being given away. This film is sure to involve politics, humorous moments, and a revolutionary approach to an age old problem.

Come out and learn how food waste impacts communities. You may even get motivated enough to make your own film and question common wasteful tactics. And, the filmmaker will be at the film for a Q&A session.

Things actually got started on Sunday with a great show by CHOO CHOO SOUL and another one today for young students at 10 pm. Coming up later today, MASS ENSEMBLE begins its week long residency with a 5:30 PM Yoga Class outdoors at the site of the Giant Earth Harp. Bring your own mat and plenty of WATER for this one!

Then on Tuesday through Thursday, get ready for daily performances on the Earth Harp at noon, 2 PM and 6 PM culminating with a MASS Happy Hour (complete with Cash Bar) on Thursday from 5:30 - 6:30 PM. Have a cocktail and experience the final outdoor performance!

Carlos Pino

Local jazz guitarist, composer, and educator Carlos Pino is the ASC Teaching Artist leading our Robert Redus School of Guitar Project. The project was born out of a vision from friends and family of the late Robert Clark Redus IV to spread his gift of music. During this year-long program, six students will have the opportunity to study guitar and through a commitment to lessons, practice, responsibility, and volunteerism the students can actually earn a guitar of their own at the end of the school year.

Carlos Pino is a graduate of the University of Alabama (B.A.) and Rutgers University (M.M. in Jazz Studies). While in college, Carlos studied guitar under Brian Lutterbie, Tom Wolfe and then Vic Juris. He also studied briefly with Jack Wilkins, Paul Bollenbach, and Ralph Bowen. Carlos Pino has shared the stage with artists such as Ellis Marsalis, Claudio Roditi, Oteil Burbridge, Col. Bruce Hampton, and Bill Kruetzmann. He has performed all over the United States, Japan, and Colombia. Carlos presently performs solo guitar in many Birmingham venues and is a sideman in several groups, ranging from big band jazz, spoken word improv, to rock and bluegrass. Currently, Carlos performs regularly with The Exhibit(s) , the Sharrif Simmons Ensemble and The Nite Flight Big Band.

Carlos also spends a lot of time in musical theatre. He has worked with Red Mountain Musical Theater, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Theater (West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, Godspell and Honky Tonk Angels). Carlos has also performed with the Rubicon Theater Company in Ventura, California (Man of La Mancha). Some of his other performance credits include Cats, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Batboy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Beehive, Always Patsy Cline, Almost Heaven, and Doo-Wop. Carlos is in demand as a guitarist because of his versatility in various musical styles.

In addition to performing, Carlos has been teaching guitar lessons privately for over a decade working with students from a wide range of ages and experience. He is presently adjunct faculty (jazz guitar) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has been involved in teaching jazz guitar at music camps over the years and recently conducted a week long jazz guitar camp at the University of Caldas, in Manizales, Colombia.
Enhancing lives through creative and artistic experiences is the primary goal of our arts education program. Fulfilling this goal wouldn’t be possible without our amazing Teaching Artists!

County Times: You poked fun at yourself on a recent "Snickers" bar television commercial, acting the diva with Aretha Franklin. Do you often find worshipful fans treating you like a queen?

LIZA: I thought the "Snickers" commercial was so funny. People do treat me as if I'm royalty until they meet me, then they see I'm just Liza. It's funny, I know a lot of real royalty and they're very down to earth because they were born into it. I was born into Hollywood royalty (her parents were Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli), and there's nothing to be snobby about. You just do your job and live your life.

ASC’s Arts Education & Outreach Initiative Gets a New Name & Unveils New Programs

With the opening of ArtPlay, the ASC’s new arts education center, exciting new programs are being planned now, including theatre programs for all ages.

Acting Out Theater Workshop for children ages 7-14
The nine-week experience will take place 10 a.m. - noon each Saturday Sept. 25 - Nov. 20, 2010. The workshop shares with children the mechanics of acting and performance. Participants will learn theater games, improvisation, warm-up and concentration exercises, voice and diction, theatre terminology, character development and minimal musical theater basics through a variety of fun, yet intense classes. Best of all, the children will get a chance to showcase their newly developed skills when the workshop culminates with a showcase production open to all parents and friends. The classes are programmed for students who are seriously interested in performance, as well as for those who just want to have fun.

Beginning Acting for Adults Workshop
Throughout the 10-week course, students will learn the basics of acting including theater terminology, voice and diction, improvisation, character development and more, through acting games, lessons and exercises. Participants will even come away from the class with their very own prepared monologue for auditions. A showcase performance for all participants is scheduled at the end of the 10 weeks. The beginning acting classes will take place 6 - 8 p.m. each Monday Sept. 13 - Nov. 15, 2010.

Intermediate Acting for Adults Workshop: Scene Development
This adult acting class will focus primarily on scene development. Students will be able to build on their basic foundation and further develop their technique, learn how to establish realistic relationships with a scene partner, how to work with a director and how to use positive expectations to achieve a goal. Students will rehearse and perform full-length scenes that will explore the depth of great acting for a culminating showcase open to supportive family and friends. Classes will take place 6 - 8 p.m. each Wednesday Sept. 15 - Nov. 17.

High school students are invited to audition for a performance-based program in conjunction with Make It Happen Theatre Company in which students will attend weekly theater classes and rehearsals that will culminate in a performance, “Extraordinary Americans Who Happen to be…” This performance will be researched, written and performed by the student participants as part of the ASC Kids’ Club series. Amazing Volunteers Make the Arts Possible

We couldn’t do what we do at the ASC without our amazing, and ever-growing, group of dedicated volunteers which includes our ushers! Did you know that our ASC ushers are all volunteers, not paid staff? You have to ask, who are these people who are willing to donate so much of their time? The answer to that question is the fun part! They are the most diverse group of people you can imagine. What they have in common is a true love for the arts and desire to see Birmingham’s cultural community thrive.

“They are the Greeters, the Seaters, the Direction Givers, and the Completers of what is a communal effort to satisfy the needs of the Patrons of the ASC,” says Jerry Sims, ASC House Events Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. Jerry goes on to say, “Each year, more than 2,500 Usher assignments are filled by these volunteers that give us their generous time and efforts. It would be difficult for us to keep the doors open without their assistance. Cheers for them all!”

Brad & Donna Dahl are two of these valuable individuals. Donna talks about her experience as an ASC Usher:

"Brad is a physical therapist and I am a teacher. We have been ushers for about 10 years at the Alys Stephens Center. It is an incredible gift to be able to see such outstanding talent presented by the ASC for only giving our time. We smile, greet, and tell folks we are happy they chose to come to a concert. Wow!! Both of us enjoy many types of music - classical, folk, Celtic, jazz, world, and most especially the focus on the talent in music and dance from many cultures around the globe. The variety offered by the Alys Stephens Center is perfect for us.

Thinking back on really memorable events brings to mind Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul with her amazing stage presence and talent, Itzhak Perlman transported us to a realm of music reserved only for the heavens, Anoushka and her father Ravi Shankar, what a privilege to be in the same hall with the spiritual embodiment of grace and beauty in the dichotomy of youth and age! The Spanish classical guitarist who played "Aranjuez" with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and his encore composition dedicated to his father who taught him brought tears to our eyes with his mastery of technique and tenderness of delivery.

Each evening as we arrive we feel honored to have the opportunity to volunteer and welcome guests who come to enjoy, always leaving the performance on a higher plane."

Q&A with Sam Bush

What a week bluegrass master Sam Bush has had! He spent the weekend headlining the famed Telluride Bluegrass Festival, then taped an episode of the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Monday that aired last night. The episode was especially memorable because the show experienced a power outage! Sam Bush, playing with Dierks Bentley, played a great acoustic number.

Sam performs with Dierks again on tonight’s Craig Ferguson Show. Then…he makes his way to Birmingham for a special show this Friday night! Enjoy this Q&A with Sam Bush on the way home from Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Here’s an excerpt from our conversation with Sam.

ASC: Ok, we want to experience the Telluride Bluegrass Festival vicariously through you. What’s it like being there and performing?

SAM: It’s like getting to go back to summer camp, re-acquainting with all of your old friends, while being in one of the most beautiful spots in America!

ASC: What artists are you looking forward to seeing and/or performing with? Anybody new we should check out?

SAM: I enjoyed playing with the reunion of Peter Rowan and Crucial Country, and of course – with the Sam Bush Band – especially when we started our set with the theme from Blazing Saddles. It was fun playing with 18 South – a newly formed band out of Nashville.

ASC: Speaking of new music and artists, what has your ears perked up these days?

SAM: I really enjoy Dierks Bentley’s new record produced by Jon Randall Stewart.

ASC: What song or album on your ipod would most surprise your fans (maybe even your friends)?

SAM: A few things – John McLaughlin “Floating Point,” Best of National Lampoon Radio Hour, Marilyn Manson, and The Beatles “Love.”

ASC: It’s been several years since you’ve performance at the ASC (and you’ll be coming straight off Telluride to the ASC for your June 25 show. Hopefully we can keep the spirit of the festival going in Birmingham for you.) This time around you’re being joined by Alison Brown. I know you’re performing separate sets, but I’m guessing (hoping) we can look forward to some cross-pollination too?

SAM: I too hope for some jamming, as I love Alison, her band, and her music.

ASC: Any other teasers you can give us about the B’ham show?

Lead singer Charles Walker doesn’t imitate, emulate or try to resuscitate a bygone nostalgic era. He is soul, the real deal, still carrying the flaming torch of funk and soul lit back in the late 60s at the Apollo Theater where he opened up for icons like James Brown and Wilson Pickett.

The Swell Season Reviewed

The Swell Season, Wed. night at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, AL.

Review rating: Four out of five stars.

Who: The Swell Season, a folk-rock band that features Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, stars of the indie film "Once." The two singer-songwriters -- he’s a scruffy and charismatic Irishman; she’s an elfin and reserved Czech -- were backed by four skillful musicians playing guitar, bass, fiddle and drums. (They’re all members of Hansard’s other band, The Frames.)

When and where: 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Jemison Concert Hall of the Alys Stephens Center.Justin Townes Earle opened the show at 7 p.m.

Audience: Not a full house, but an enthusiastic bunch of fans assembled to watch Hansard and Irglova make their Alabama debut. Tunes from "Once," a romantic musical released in 2007, received the loudest cheers and applause from the crowd -- especially "Falling Slowly," an Oscar winner for best original song.

Dynamics: Hansard and Irglova had very different stage personalities, but they fit together like puzzle pieces. He seemed hearty, humorous and passionately driven; she came off as elegant, whimsical and calmly introspective. The two shared the spotlight throughout the show, trading positions on acoustic guitar and piano.

Side note: The principals became a love match during the filming of "Once," but split afterward and remain professional partners.

The set: Ninety minutes of music (plus encores), mostly focusing on tunes from the film soundtrack and its follow-up, 2009’s "Strict Joy." Highlights included "Feeling the Pull," "Fantasy Man," "Back Broke," "In These Arms," "Paper Cup," "Leave," "Say it to Me Now," "When Your Mind’s Made Up."

Words and music: Many of the songs were multi-layered, with unexpected shifts of mood and tempo that evoked a wide range of emotions. The primary subject, a love relationship both sweet and sour, received a thorough exploration through the lyrics. In a way, the words seemed like dialogue in a play -- no real surprise, given the movie connection.

The hit: The Swell Season saved "Falling Slowly" until about three-quarters into the concert. Although the ballad featured tender harmonies from the principals, the overall impact was rather low-key and limp. In the end, it was eclipsed by the more dynamic songs on the set list.

Extras: Well-chosen covers of "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison and "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," a signature song for Willie Nelson. Also, fiddler Colm Mac Con Iomaire offered a precise and lively instrumental on "The Court of New Town."

Verdict: High-level musicianship, intriguing songs, pop-culture value. That’s win-win-win.

Once Revisted

In anticipation of The Swell Season’s show this week at the ASC, I’d like to revisit the film that introduced the songwriting duo to the world.

In 2006 a small unassuming movie created a lot of buzz on the indie circuit. It didn’t have a big name director. It was shot almost entirely on location with no sets. The stars of the picture weren’t even actors, but a couple of musicians who few (in the U.S.) had even heard of. But Once, the tiny movie with a big heart began to resonate with viewers and critics. By the time Once was nominated and won an Oscar for Best Original Song, I decided to check it out for myself. Like so many others, I knew nothing about it beyond the simple plot synopsis: A street performer and a Czech immigrant meet on the streets of Dublin, and begin to write, rehearse, and record songs that tell their story.

The two characters are never given names. We only know them as the “guy” played by Glenn Hansard and the “girl” portrayed by Marketa Irglova. I assumed that both were just small time actors from Europe or Ireland, so it was a revelation to hear Hansard’s earnest voice wailing on the opening track “Say it to me Now.” As the story unfolds, the two strangers discover a mutually shared love of music. The guy wants to record a demo and the girl is a classically-trained pianist who wants to be a songwriter.

When his clunky sexual advances fail, the guy instead focuses on the girl's musical talent, and asks that she take a listen to a new song he’s been working on for his demo. They find a music shop where she can play piano, and he gives her the sheet music and asks her to give it a try. What follows is one of the most stirring, heartfelt duets ever put on film. The moving “Falling Slowly” is the song that won the Oscar, and it’s also the song that made me fall in love with this film. The power of that scene can only come from a genuine, authentic love of music. Physical attraction may have brought them together, but inspiration is the bond that cements their friendship in a way that sex never can. Rarely has the creative spark been captured so eloquently in a movie. Pure magic.

The girl – a young mother who is estranged from her significant other – has come to Ireland seeking work and lives in a tiny apartment with her mother. The guy is invited to dinner and gets to know the family. Recognizing her talents as a musician, he gives her a cassette tape of music featuring another of his songs. He asks her to lend her lyric-writing skills to the piece. She eagerly accepts the challenge.

She listens to the song time and again, trying to come up with the right words until the batteries in her cassette player die. She walks a short distance to a convenience store to buy replacements and plays the song in her earphones on the return walk while singing the new lyrics. “If You Want Me” is the name of the track and it was also the moment I realized I was watching a musical. The film’s ability to play with the conventions of a musical while celebrating it as an art form is one of its delightful strengths.

Knowing absolutely nothing about Once allowed me to get swept up in a way that films rarely do. I was won over by the likability of the characters. I was invested in their relationship, and wanted to see them succeed as a partnership. There is obvious sexual tension, but romance takes a back seat to the creative process. These two people captured lightning in a bottle, and where it would take them – together or apart – wasn’t important. The only thing that mattered was the present.

Sometimes the right person only comes along once… and recognizing and cherishing that moment can be the greatest of life’s gifts.

New Documentary About ASC Education Program

An exciting new documentary about one of the Alys Stephens Center's pilot education programs has just been released. The doc by UAB students Sarah Johnson and Alyssa Mitchell as part of an ethnographic filmmaking class offered through UAB Digital Community Studies spotlights the Make It Happen Performing Ensemble.

The program, which is offered free to participants, gives high school students an incredible educational and enriching experience. It is made possible through a generous contribution by Jane Stephens Comer.

Through a partnership with "Make it Happen" Performing Ensemble and the Birmingham City Schools, the ASC invites high school students to audition for this performance based program in which students will attend weekly theatre classes and rehearsals that will culminate in the performance entitled, "Extraordinary Americans Who Happen to be…" This performance will be researched, written, and performed by the student participants as part of the ASC Kids' Club series. Additionally, students selected for the ensemble will also participate in the Martin Hames Arts Mentoring Program. Students invited into the program will be required to make a year-long commitment to all practices, performances, and activities associated with the program. Hopefully by now you’ve heard about the new ASC season and you’ve checked out either the Season Announcement E-Card, the downloadable new season brochure file, or glanced over the season calendar.

As Programming Director it’s my job to work with UAB Administration, ASC boards, and our staff to pinpoint the best artists to fill our season and to design a diverse and exciting lineup of not just performers but also innovative, educational, and entertaining events. We receive hundreds of artist suggestions each year (thank you for your suggestions!) and an array of artists spanning many genres are considered. The whole process of putting a season together takes about 10 months.

It’s hard to believe but the ASC turns 14 this year. Do you remember life in Birmingham before the ASC? As a life-long live music lover, I’ve always attended shows at Birmingham’s great venues: Alabama Theatre, 5 Pts Music Hall, Oak Mountain Amphitheatre … I love all of these places. But when the ASC opened it filled a niche that Birmingham desperately needed to serve. It’s not just a place to see performances (in an incredible acoustical setting), it’s also a place to really learn about the arts and engage in the creative process.

As we’re entering our teenage years, we’ve been asking ourselves the big questions. What is the mission of the ASC? What purpose should performing arts center serve in the community and in relation to fellow arts organizations? How can we better foster arts education? What do the arts say about our community?

Asking these questions has allowed us to introduce many innovative new programs and initiatives for this new season. Here are some things you’ll notice:

· We’re presenting fun, new festivals three times this season. Beginning with an 11 Day Opening Festival that includes a rare performance by music legend Liza Minnelli. Next, we explore global arts & culture with the World on Stage Festival. In the Spring, we celebrate women in the arts with the Women Rock Festival.

· We’re exploring new artistic genres including Living Art. You’ll experience three presentations of Living Art - Mass Ensemble, the Mystical Arts of Tibet, and the School Sculpture Residency Project. Each company will be in residence for seven days creating and demonstrating large-scale, dynamic works of art for the entire community to share and enjoy.

· In early 2011, we will embark on the largest arts education endeavor in our history. The ASC’s “Arts in Action” Education & Outreach Program will blossom with the opening of a brand new arts education institute allowing us to serve the Southeast as a leader in arts education. You’ll also notice a greater emphasis on arts education for all ages in partnership with our presented programming. These range from master classes and mentoring programs to workshops for students and educators. Over the course of the season, thousands of area students and adults will engage in artistic programs offered by the ASC, many free of charge.

· To further support our partner organizations in the arts community, we have shifted our programming focus from presenting a full classical series to presenting artists who blur the lines between high art and pop culture. We hope you will find that the season offers artistic endeavors that bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to explore and celebrate the arts. You will also notice many more free community events and interactive programs and performances as well as the introduction of year-round programming with an exciting new Summer Series.

Know the Difference Between Zydeco & Creole?

Q: What is Zydeco?
A: Zydeco music is one of the most unique and wildly popular forms of American Roots Music. A Southern music tradition that is revered all over the world. It is the indigenous music of the multi-racial, multi-cultural French speaking Creoles of south west Louisiana and the core instrumentation is the accordion (diatonic-button & chromatic-key) and the frottoir (or rubboard). The word Zydeco comes from the African word “zaico laga laga”, meaning “to dance”. Many zydeco songs are sung in French. The music has evolved a great deal throughout the years and has become a fusion of many different styles and musical influences. The one constant in the music has been the change. The notable Dr. John of New Orleans was once quoted by CNN in an interview, stating that “if the music aint changin’ - it’s dyin”. Clifton Chenier changed the music from the days of Amede Ardoin. Amede Ardoin changed the music from the days of the jure and so the change continues. The earliest form of zydeco music was called the jure: the slave songs, the spirituals, field songs, call and response all a cappella and without instruments. Today zydeco music is featured in film, TV and national advertising and has garnered 3 Grammy awards in the past 20 years.

Q: Who is a Creole?
A: Most standard dictionaries indicate that a Creole is a native of Louisiana descended from the original French settlers. A person of African and mixed European, esp. French and/or Spanish decent. However the Native American and German roots are prominent as well in the Creole community. In St. Landry Parish, LA, the Simien family is one of those first families documented to have settled that area. Some experts say the Louisiana Creoles are part of one of the “most complex rural sub cultures in North America.” Dr. Carl Brasseaux, author of Creoles of Color in the Bayou Country, states that the Creoles were some of the “first families of Louisiana” and official records reflect that they have been here for over 300 years. I am 8th generation Creole and my father’s first language was French.

Q: Where are you from?
A: I grew up in the small church parish community of Mallet, LA in St. Landry Parish, which is considered the “Capitol of Zydeco Music”. My band is from Mallet (Ralph), Lafayette (Danny), New Orleans (Sammy), Mexico (Jose) and Greece (Demetri).

Q: When did you first start playing music?
A: My first instrument was the family piano, but it was in High School that I really got serious with the trumpet and then the accordion about the same time.

Q: How’d you get started playing?
A: When I was 14-15 my parents bought me my first accordion. I would record the zydeco shows on the radio, take the tape in my room and practice until I learned the material. I picked some guys from the community to be my band, whoever was available at the time and just started playing local dances at the church halls. Then I moved onto the zydeco club circuit of Louisiana and Texas. A woman I knew from DC, Patti Harrington booked my first “national tour” to the NE in 1983. I signed with a national booking agency in 1985 and the rest is history!

Q: How long have you been playing professionally?
A: Over 20 years now. Two decades and millions of miles later I have performed in over 25 countries to probably a million people now. If I did the math and reached, modestly, 50,000 people a year for 20 years, that’s an easy one million, right? My friends and road family make my life on tour so much easier. The promoters who I cannot even call promoters any more cuz it’s just too impersonal, have become like family. Our fans, another word I cannot use comfortably, because these generous people take us into their homes and introduce us to their parents, their kids, their colleagues and they also become friends and also more like a family. How many wedding receptions we have performed for-you don’t spend this important day with someone and not feel a type of kinship-it’s one of the greatest compliments to be included in this special celebration. Another one was when someone wrote to us to tell us our music was played at the birth of their child! That was really something special.

Q: When was your first big gig in front of a large audience?
A: The World’s Fair in NOLA in 1984. I could not believe the response and the applause we got from those audiences. At home in the church halls and zydeco clubs, they don’t really applaud, so when I experienced this for the first time, I knew this was the way it should be and this helped inspire me to push forward.

Q: How long has your band been with you?
A: Ralph and Danny have been with me for like 15 years. The others different lengths of time. My guys are so important to the music and the mission and they support me in so many different ways. I am very fortunate to have such talented and committed artists to help me fulfill my artistic vision.

Q: Have you ever played New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival?
A: Every year for the past 18 years.

Q: When is Mardi Gras and what does it mean?
A: It’s always the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi means Tuesday and Gras means Fat. In medieval France they would fatten a cow to kill for the feast on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which starts the 40 days of penance before Easter and the resurrection of Jesus. At home we still celebrate this holiday and abide by the 40 days sacrificing something we enjoy.

Q: Do you cook and what do you cook well?
A: I love to cook! Of course like most guys, I pride myself on my barbecue. But I really love to cook gumbo and sauce picquante. I my gumbo I use turkey based sausage and tasso (smoked meat used for seasoning) products from Best Stop in Scott, LA along with shrimp and crab claws. I use dry roux that also helps make it more lean and healthy. I sometimes fry a pretty good catfish and shrimp in the backyard. We live 20 minutes from Delcambe where the shrimp boats come in and so we like to drive down to buy the absolute freshest shrimp you can find!

Terrance Simien's "Creole for Kidz" Program

A multicultural arts-in-education “informance” (informational performance) that has reached over 250,000 K-12 students, parents and educators at schools, art centers and festivals around the globe in places far away from Louisiana. This unique program has informed and engaged young and family audiences in Australia, Mali, Paraguay and all over Canada!

The Creole for Kidz & The History of Zydeco program is of course centered on the indigenous zydeco music of the French speaking Creoles of south Louisiana and is accompanied by a 6 page study guide used to help prepare the students in advance for the performance.

“This production was a huge success. The school and the Mayors Office continue to get calls almost daily from parents and teachers in thanks for the presentation they attended. During each performance the connection between Simien, his band and the teacher/student audience was almost palpable. While having the time of their lives, students and teachers were learning new things in an interactive environment while affirming each other’s diversity. Live on the Plaza Artist Profile: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience

"Where we come from, if people don't dance it's an insult!," said Terrance Simien in Billboard. "The real deal is: We a lot of times get people in the crowd who are kinda shy and really wanna dance. We kinda force things so the ones that should dance will come up." Simien accomplishes this by interspersing frantically fluttering hand gestures with riffs from his diatonic button accordion equipped with an extra-long bellows that he allows to hang and shake as he bounds about the stage playing it behind his back and between his legs.

Zydeco has always been high energy music, but Simien's frenetic presence sets him apart from his contemporaries. According to Rick Mason in the St. Paul Pioneer Press- Dispatch, even when Simien was virtually unknown in Louisiana, his performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival generated sparks in the crowd. With "his face painted in a vivid rainbow of colors" and his "long hair flying in every direction, Simien tore up the place with a sweaty, explosive performance," Mason remarked.

The word zydeco is a modification of les haricots, or snap beans, as popularized by the traditional Cajun song "The Snap Beans Aren't Salty." According to Timothy White in Billboard, zydeco grafts Acadian folk songs on to the Afro-Caribbean rhythms brought to Louisiana by French-speaking slaves and free men of color after the Haitian Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century. German immigrants introduced the accordion to the fiddle-focused Cajun instrumentals in the 1870s, and the washboard or "frottoir," played with spoons or bottle openers, gave zydeco its unique percussive drive.

Clifton Chenier did much to popularize the music in the 1950s; in the St. Petersburg Times, Simien credited him with opening new vistas for zydeco. Chenier expanded the slower, mostly acoustical sound of traditional zydeco by adding drums and electrical instruments, infusing it with a strong rhythm and blues feeling. Indeed, today's zydeco bands often carry strong guitarists capable of delivering hard-edged blues.

Simien noted in the St. Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatch that the music continues to evolve: "We grew up listening to different kinds of music--rock and roll, soul, reggae, pop, and stuff like that. So I incorporate some of that stuff with our zydeco music, just by writing songs that might have been influenced by maybe a Bob Dylan, a Mick Jagger, or something like that."

Born in Mallet, Louisiana, on September 3, 1965, Simien spent three years studying jazz and classical trumpet at Lawtell Elementary and grew up watching his mother sing in the choir of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Like many people of his generation, Simien initially didn't care much for zydeco. As he said in the St. Petersburg Times: "There was a time, mostly in the 1970s, when zydeco was almost extinct. It was confined to the older generation. Younger people thought it wasn't cool to go to the zydeco dances. I was into soul music and rock and roll."

But that changed when he stopped going to the record hops at the church hall because he thought they were too juvenile and uptight. At 13, he started sneaking into local clubs like Slim's Y-Ki-Ki in Opelousas. In the St. Paul Pioneer Press- Dispatch, Simien recalled that he "fell in love with the music 'cause it was something that I could really dance to and didn't have to dress a certain way or dance a certain way. It was laid-back stuff, man, something I could really relate to."

Soon Simien was a regular listener to the weekly Lou Collins' Black Zydeco Special out of Eunice, teaching himself the music of Fernest Arceneaux, the Sam Brothers, and Clifton Chenier on a $250 Hohner single-row diatonic accordion he had received for his fifteenth birthday. Unlike other zydeco performers such as Buckwheat Zydeco and Clifton Chenier, who play the bulkier piano version, Simien has stuck with the cruder button accordion. Although it limits virtuoso technique, Simien's instrument of choice rocks harder and lets him move around more, according to Eric Snider in the St. Petersburg Times. In 1982 Simien started the initial and short-lived incarnation of the Mallet Playboys, because as he explained in Billboard, it "was an older clan that didn't want to learn more than five songs."

Simien was more careful with his band selection from then on, holding auditions to assemble a younger group comprised of his longtime rubboard player Earl Sally, bassist Popp Esprite, Troy Gaspard on drums, and Mark Simar on guitar. Simien had been splitting his time between working with his father as a bricklayer and playing at local clubs. At the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans, however, he was noticed by a woman who booked him for several dates in the Washington, D.C., area. Soon the band was touring all over the United States.

In 1985 Simien performed at New York's Lone Star Cafe. He related in The New Folk Music that "all kinds of musicians showed up to hear us. Keith Richards and Ron Wood got on stage and played. Paul Simon came down to hear us, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan." Simon heard about Simien from Dickie Landry, a Cajun saxophonist, composer, and producer who had spent a couple of decades in the New York music scene. Simon considered the band for his Graceland album, but ultimately settled on the more traditional Rockin' Dopsie.

Nevertheless, their meeting was fortuitous because Simon produced a 12-hour recording session for the band. As Simien recounted in the St. Petersburg Times: "Paul gave us the tapes and said, 'This is a present, do what you want to do with it.'" Simon even sang background vocals on the song "You Used to Call Me," which was released as a regional single on the small Grand Point label. And as Rick Mason commented in the St. Paul Pioneer Press-Dispatch: "The single nonetheless became part of the band's promotional package, helping the Playboys secure gigs for its increasingly hectic international schedule."

Dickie Landry also got Simien an audition with director Jim McBride and Dennis Quaid for a cameo during a club scene in the 1987 movie The Big Easy. Hired on the spot, Simien ended up co-writing one of the two songs on the soundtrack. The year 1987 also marked the band's first European tour, which included the prestigious Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where they opened for Fats Domino and Sarah Vaughan. In 1990 Simien and the Mallet Playboys released their first album, Zydeco on the Bayou, on Restless and performed on a national Chevrolet commercial. The band tours constantly and has opened for Los Lobos and Robert Palmer.

In 1992 the Mallet Playboys taped a television show for PBS's Lonesome Pine Specials and began recording their second project, There's Room for Us All. This album is indicative of Simien's eclectic musical vision. From adding a talkbox to zydeco oldies and turning Boozoo Chavis's classic "Dog Hill" into an extended party mix, to experimenting with reggae and soul--for years Simien has covered Peter Tosh--Simien continued to expand zydeco.

The album also boasted the presence of guests like bassist/producer Daryl Johnson, pianist Art Neville, and the Meters. As Simien commented in Billboard, "The album's title says it best: There's a lot of musicians on this record that came from different bands and different backgrounds, and there are a lot of different people in this world that we gotta learn to love and accept." For Simien there is even room for the audience, whom he often welcomes on stage, giving them tambourines, cowbells, and washboards, inviting them to join him as he carries on.

The All-New Summer Concert Series at the ASC!

Just announced, UAB’s Alys Stephens Center is presenting a Summer Concert Series for the first time beginning May 26 with The Swell Season. Fear not, the shows are all casual - come as you are! On June 25, Sam Bush & Friends grace the Alys Stephens Center with their ecclectic acoustic stylings, mixing reggae, funk, jazz, and blues, just to name a few! Then, on July 23, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Grammy-Award-Winning singer and songwriter, will stop by the ASC to show her acoustic prowess, more specifically in the folk genre. And, as a grand finale to the Summer Season, Jonny Lang graces the ASC with his prodigal blues sound. Lang has played with the likes of Buddy Guy, the Rolling Stones, and Jeff Beck. "Can You Keep Up With Smokey?" Smokey Robinson Today

Today, Robinson still continues to grace us with his Motown soul. He has been given such awards as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Smokey has continued to perform and tour periodically. In 2003, Robinson served as a guest judge for American Idol during "Billy Joel Week." He issued a gospel LP, Food for the Spirit in 2004. In 2005, Smokey Robinson was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. A new album of pop standards from the early 20th century, Timeless Love, was released in June 2006. It was originally recorded with a jazz combo, but strings were added after the fact, giving the album more of a lush sound but removing much of the jazz feeling of the disc.At its 138th Commencement Convocation in May 2006, Howard University conferred on Robinson the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa. In December 2006 Robinson was one of five Kennedy Center honorees, along with Dolly Parton (with whom Robinson had recorded a 1987 duet, "I Know You By Heart"), Zubin Mehta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zubin_Mehta) , Stephen Spielberg, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. On February 11, 2007 Robinson sang "Tracks Of My Tears" at the 49th annual Grammy Awards, as part of a tribute to R&B music which included Motown labelmate Lionel Richie and current R&B star Chris Brown. Robinson performed on the sixth season finale of American Idol on May 23, 2007. Robinson and the top six male contestants performed a medley of his hits.On March 25, 2009, Robinson appeared again on American Idol this time as a mentor. He coached the top 10 contestants of Season 8, who performed classic Motown songs. He also premiered the first single, "You're the One For Me", which features Joss Stone. The song also became available on iTunes and Amazon, March 26, 2009. The song is an updated version of the song "You're The One For Me Bobby," which he wrote and produced for The Marvelettes in 1968 for their album "Sophisticated Soul." On March 20 2009, The Miracles were finally honored as a group with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Smokey was present with original Miracles members Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore ,ex-wife (and Bobby's cousin) Claudette Robinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudette_Robinson), and ,Gloria White, accepting for her husband , the late Ronnie White Smokey's replacement, 70's Miracles lead singer, Billy Griffin was also honored. Controversially, original Miracle Mary Tarplin was not honored, against the wishes of his fellow Miracles, and the group's fans, who felt that he should have also been there to share the honor.On May 9, 2009, Smokey Robinson received an honorary doctorate degree and gave a commencement speech at Berklee College of Music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berklee_College_of_Music) 's commencement ceremony.On August 25, 2009 Robinson released Time Flies When You're Having Fun. A self produced and written CD of mostly new material on his own RobSo label. The CD includes a cover of the Norah Jones hit "Don't Know Why". Special guests on the LP include India Arie, Carlos Santana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Santana) , and Joss Stone. The Joss Stone duet "You're the one for me" was performed on American Idol. Smokey's songs have always suggested that love is a complex game, if not an outright conundrum, and his own life is a testament to that viewpoint. He married Claudette in 1959 when he was 19, and they divorced 27 years later. They remain close — remarkably so, in fact. It seems to be far more than a matter of being bound by finances, or by the two children (Berry, 32, and Tamla, 31) and three grandchildren (3-year-old Lyric, a girl, and the twins, Alex and Alexis, born in December) they share.

The lyrics to a pair of old Miracles hits offer significant clues to the powerful, possibly karmic, nature of his relationship with Claudette. In the plaintive ''Ooo Baby Baby,'' he sang, ''I did you wrong/My heart went out to play/But in the game I lost you/What a price to pay,'' all too accurately presaging the events leading up to the couple's divorce in '86 (two years after Smokey fathered an out-of-wedlock son, Trey, with a paramour). ''More Love,'' which Smokey wrote expressly for Claudette in 1967, tells another tale, one in which the singer pledges to shower his mate with ''more love/and more joy/than age or time could ever destroy.'' Both sentiments ring true.

''Claudette is my heart,'' says Smokey, who has never remarried. ''We're not in love, but we are lovers. I don't mean physically, I mean we're spiritually connected. I could not have a woman in my life who would not understand who Claudette is to me.''

For her part, Claudette says she is ''healed'' of any post-divorce ill will, and speaks feelingly of her ex-husband's fundamental goodness. ''He has never stopped coming to visit for the holidays,'' she says. ''What always came across [in Smokey] was a gentleness. I remember telling my mother after I met him, 'Mom, he's one of the nicest guys I know.' I think he got those qualities from his mom and his older sister. His mother passed away when he was 10, but she must have been a very wise woman to inject all that wisdom and knowledge about life into him.''

The son of a bowling-alley pinsetter and a housewife, William Robinson Jr. was born Feb. 19, 1940, on Belmont Street in the North End of Detroit. When he was 6 or 7, his Uncle Claude christened him ''Smokey Joe,'' which the young William, a Western-movie enthusiast, at first assumed to be ''his cowboy name for me.'' Some time later, he learned the deeper significance of his nickname: It derived from ''smokey,'' a pejorative term for dark-skinned blacks. ''I'm doing this,'' his uncle told the light-skinned boy, ''so you won't ever forget that you're black.''

Introducing Birmingham’s hottest outdoor dance and live music party!

Spring is in the air. And now it’s time to get out of that normal Thursday grind. Come step outside for some extra-groovy evenings filled with dancing and live music. Move to the sights and sounds of some of the country’s funkiest tunemasters as the ASC outdoor plaza is transformed into a fun-tastic dance floor beneath stars. Dear Alys,

Costumes can be fun for an actor. The costumes for this show are way cool. When I say “way cool,” I mean that Melody Taylor as Dorothy, Stephen French as the Scarecrow, Ron Valentine as the Tin Man, Ron Bourdages as the Narrator, Ginny S. Loggins, Gabrielle Metz, Darrell Revel, Jessica Holdnak, Mark Kunkel and Edward Gurney as various other memorable characters all look incredible. Cool also has another meaning and that does not fit my costume at all. I think it looks good, but it is WARM underneath all that fur. It’s the price you pay for looking good. I have to give props to Mary Gurney and Janelle Cochran for their wonderful work on these costumes. I have worked with both of these fine ladies a number of times and they are really the best in Birmingham. When you come see the show, and I know you will, you’ll get to see their wonderful craftswomanship.

We have one more night of rehearsal before we open tomorrow. Jerry has gotten wonderful performances out of each one of these fine actors. The guy is talented. The cast is talented. The crew is talented. It’s a show not to be missed. One more post after we open tomorrow and then it's up to you to come see the magic.

Diary of a Cowardly Lion: Entry Three

Dear Alys,

Only three more days until we perform before an audience of kids. The first two days of shows are Educational Outreach performances. The Alys Stephens Center’s Education and Outreach programs are offered to local schools so that they may bring their kids to experience the ASC and embrace the arts I think that our education programs are phenomenal (disclaimer: although biased because I work in Education and Outreach, it really is an amazing program). Down the Yellow Brick Road is part of our “Meet the Artist” series and is free to local students. We will see close to 600 students during our 4 performances on Thursday and Friday! Amazing huh? They are completely full!!! YAY!

Tonight is tech rehearsal. What that means is that we will be working with lights and sound for the first time. Tech can be a tedious process of starting and stopping and starting and stopping. It’s usually different with these shows, because Russ Friedrikis did our lighting, sound and set. If you’ve never seen Russ’ work…. That’s reason enough to come to this show. The set is brilliant and the lighting and sound are stunning. It almost feels like a crime to be skipping, jumping and falling all over his set…. It really is a work of art.

So guys, are you going to come see the show on Saturday?!? I will probably post at least two more times before we open, just to convince you!

Dear Alys,

The blocking for the show is finished. This means, in actor speak, that we know where we are going and where we should be when we get there. Now comes one of the things that I really love about the acting process, the fine tuning. Jerry Sims, our writer/director will help us fine tune each moment so that the experience is the best it can be for our audience. I like finding new ways to deliver lines and new moments to get a laugh or make the moment POP!

I mentioned the music in the show in my last entry, but let me tell you a little more about it. The songs that Jerry and Ron have written and the voices we have attached to those songs are going to blow you away. They will have you dancing, they will touch your heart and they will be songs that will not leave your mind once the journey is over. One of the songs I sing has a dance break, which is new from the last time we did the show. Be prepared for that, because it’s a fun addition that Jerry wanted to add. I’m not dancing alone though, so that’s good. The audience dances with me! YAY! That song is called “I Need My Courage” and was written by Ron Bourdages and is super fun to sing, although after performing it last night, I wanted to call it “I Need Some Water,” because I was worn out completely. The Lion needs to work on his fitness. Some of my favorite songs in the show are “The Together Song,” “One Heart,” and “Friends.” One of the special things about these Kids’ Club productions, is that the songs are all originals and many of them have audience participation, which is awesome. This is a version of the Wizard of Oz that you can only see at the Alys Stephens Center. I am looking forward to tonight’s rehearsal and will keep you updated on our journey down the road.

Dear Alys,

It is true, I am becoming an animal again….. I am reprising my role as the Cowardly Lion in Jerry Sims’ original work ASC Kids’ Club presents Down the Yellow Brick Road. I have had the opportunity to play so many wonderful characters in my years as an actor. In all honesty, The Cowardly Lion, is a highlight and it’s such a joy to be roaring again for the Alys Stephens Center.

We had our first rehearsal yesterday and, just as I remembered, the script is fantastic, the songs (written by both Jerry and Ron Bourdages) are a treat, the cast is top notch and most importantly, I can’t wait to inspire the imaginations of all the kids and parents that come to the show. That is, in my opinion, the central theme of Jerry’s script…. Use your imagination.

Using my imagination to create something new with the Lion is difficult, because The Cowardly Lion is iconic, as are all the characters, in L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the movie version featuring Judy Garland. I think I have the courage for it though. It’s a pleasure to be able to share this with the kids of Birmingham. I will keep you posted on our progress, but it’s already proving to be a remarkable experience. Tonight we start blocking…… until later.

"Back by popular demand! Will Dorothy find her way through the Land of Oz and back home again? Our audience is invited to help Dorothy and other familiar characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz find their way Down the Yellow Brick Road. In this fun and interactive performance the Narrator will invite members of the audience to become active participants in the story as Dorothy and her friends make their way to the Great OZ. This production is sure to enchant children from 3 to 103."

Frank Stella Named National Medal of Arts Winner

"Washington, D.C. - "What you see is what you see," the painter (and sculptor) Frank Stella said of his paintings in 1964. Nearly four decades later, at a ceremony held at the White House yesterday, he had the opportunity to see a gold medal placed around his neck, as he was honored with the National Medal of the Arts, alongside 11 other recipients, by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama."

"The highest award presented to artists in the United States, the National Medal of the Arts dates back to 1984 and has previously honored artists including Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O'Keefe, Robert Motherwell, and Jasper Johns. Previously architects who have netted the prize include Frank Gehry, I.M. Pei, and Michael Graves."

For those unfamiliar, Frank Stella designed the statue (pictured above) in the Lower Circle. It is called "Princess Natalie" and it was commissioned by Ruth and Marvin Engel. We are so proud to have the work of a National Medal of the Arts winner right on our doorstep! Congratulations, Frank.

The sounds of Kenny Barron's piano playing, combined with Regina Carter's incredible violin skills, the absolute talent of Kiyoshi Kitigawa on cello/bass, the unbelievable drumming of Johnathan Blake, the spectacular doo-wop-style vocals of Kurt Elling, and the electrifying guitar playing of Russell Malone made for a fantastic afternoon that I will not soon forget. Never have I seen a live jazz show, and this certainly made me want to see more. There was one particular piece Kenny Barron called "Calypso," that was inspired by his days of listening to Caribbean-style rhythms, and it blew me away. It was nearly twenty minutes of sheer beauty, and the fact that, one, the piece, itself, was a brilliant example of composition, and two, the fact that every member of the group was able to play it so fluently. Obviously they had practiced, but it sounded like they had each been together for years. It was a moving sound the likes of which I cannot describe. It is concerts like these that I am glad to have gotten the opportunity to witness. What a show.”

For the past 11 seasons, the Viva Health Starlight Gala has been our city's premier black-tie event and most elegant celebration benefiting the arts. The evening typically involves a live performance from one of the world's most talented artists, and this year's Gala is no exception. Coming to the ASC on Saturday, April 24, is the legendary Smokey Robinson.
"As well as being at the birth of Motown 50 years ago with the Miracles, Robinson was a producer and, from 1961, vice-president of the label. And his work as songwriter provides an immense catalogue of magisterial pop and soul songs. Yet this show was all about Smokey the singer: a man with a voice age seems unable to wither.
It's hard to think of a singer of comparable stature who's anywhere near as compelling a performer today. On his most recent British dates, Stevie Wonder seemed unable to differentiate between moments of inspiration and bouts of cringe-worthy self-indulgence; Andy Williams's voice is increasingly frail; for all his manifold gifts, no one actually goes to a Bob Dylan gig to hear him sing. Robinson is arguably the last of the great song men left standing. If anything, his slightly increased huskiness – the only audible difference between the Robinson of today and the one who first had a hit with Shop Around 48 years ago – adds to his range, allowing for greater shading of those songs' rich details."

An Evening With Shawn Colvin

One of our favorite artists makes her first visit to the ASC. Her latest release These Four Walls is perhaps her most assured and compelling work to date. Colvin is one of those rare performers, like Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, or her youthful idol Joni Mitchell, who has been able to grow up alongside her audience and mature into her role as singer and songwriter. She was rewarded with a Best Contemporary Folk Grammy for her 1989 debut disc Steady On and reached mainstream audiences when her story of a housewife's fiery revenge, "Sunny Came Home," became an unlikely top ten hit years later and earned Colvin another Grammy. She recently co-headlined with Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, and Buddy Miller in a string of acclaimed, sold-out performances. McCoy Tyner Trio, which consists of McCoy Tyner, piano; Eric Kamau Gravatt, drums; and Reginald Veal, bass, made for a tantalizing musical and art experience at the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall. Tap dancing phenomenon Savion Glover also performed as well. The evening began with a jazz composition that was light and flirty. The music was playful and reminiscent of a fleeting moment. Interestingly enough, at the end of the song, Tyner announced that it was titled “Fly With The Wind.”
Glover, who graced the ASC in 2007 with a tantalizing performance, was introduced by Tyner. Once again, Glover was not to disappoint. McCoy Tyner Trio and Glover intertwined their talents on Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone.” Tyner’s hands moved deftly as his fingers struck each key, creating a smooth and melodic consonance that filled the concert hall. Glover faced McCoy in what appeared to be a battle of talents; as McCoy’s hands tapped each key, Glover’s feet moved fantastically while his taps echoed throughout the concert hall. Their interaction was playful and amazing to watch. At times, it seemed as if Glover’s taps could be heard before his feet moved.
Glover was all smiles throughout his performance, as he made wild gleeful gestures with his hands. As the music sped up, so did Glover as spirited taps were executed with an exuberant energy. Each tap was delivered succinctly.
“Blues on the Corner” was another song that combined jazz and tap beautifully. The jazz was introspective and fluid, definitely of the bop style, and had an artful approach as it interweaved with Glover’s tap dancing.
Glover challenged Gravett, and as each rhythmic beat escaped from the drums, Glover’s feet made fantastic movements all over the stage. In “African Village,” with its deep polyrthymic tones, Glover was quick on his feet as McCoy played deep and lush chords. Facing McCoy, Glover echoed the music with his taps, creating both light and hard sounds with his feet.
McCoy Tyner Trio was impressive with their superb ability to engage the listener and send them on a musical whirlwind. The show was simply brilliant. The polyrhythmic fusion included the mesmerizing taps of Glover, and the combination of the two art styles made for a magical evening.

Regardless of who you are, where you come from, or what you like, the idea of “free” strikes a nerve in any of us. Free food, free cars, free money – anything labeled “free” is sure to garner attention. And this is the idea that the Alys Stephens Center had in releasing it’s UAB Freshman Arts Card to the incoming students of 2009-2010. Our goal was to allow freshmen to “come into the light,” so to speak, by allowing them to experience a broad range of the arts, whether it be a concert, play, or dance, and all that for free. However, many freshmen have not yet taken advantage of the card yet. If not, you’re missing out. What is better than being able to see someone the likes of the Wailers or the upcoming Monterey Jazz Festival for no cost whatsoever?
